About Zagreb

Zagreb, capital of Croatia, is a historical city in Central Europe. Through the centuries, the city has developed as a scientific, cultural, commercial and economic center. It was born from two medieval cores in two opposite hills. Zagreb's museums preserve the rich heritage of the city and its architecture resembles other European cities like Vienna, Budapest or Prague.

Moving around

Zagreb has an efficient and well developed public transport system consisting of trams, buses and trains. Both buses and trams run 24 hours a day (there are day and night services). The same ticket of the tram will serve for the bus.

The historic cable car, one of the steepest in the world, connects the top of the city with the bottom.

Out & About

Gornji grad, or upper town, and Donji grad, the lower town, are the cultural, religious and commercial center of Zagreb. The Upper Town, the medieval heart, was developed as two separate cities, Kaptol, where now stands the imposing cathedral, and Gradec, the free city in which artisans and traders lived. Maksimir Park is the largest one in the city, a place to relax, stroll or have a picnic. In the magnificent Medvednica mountain lies the fortress of Medvedgrad which offers a magnificent view of the city.

What's going on in

C'est is d'Best is a festival held in June where you can enjoy performances of dance, music and art in all its forms.

Zagreb International Blues Festival takes place in June.

In summer, there is nothing better than enjoying the festival of fireworks on the river Sava. In the Lake Bundek, numerous beer tents and concerts spice up the night as the sky turns a million different colors.

Shopping

The heart of the city of Zagreb is full of designer shops both from Croatia and international.

The antiques market Britanski trg, on Sunday mornings, is full of life and activity. Here you can find books, decorative items and all kinds of antiques.

What's cooking?

It's worth trying the strudel, Croatian style, stuffed with cottage cheese, apple or cherries. The Paprenjak are spiced cookies that have become a souvenir of the country. The kotlovina is sausages and lamb chops cooked in its own juice with wine and spices.

Weather

The climate of Zagreb is continental, with the four seasons clearly distinguished, hot summers and cold winters.

Practical information

If you are staying several days in Zagreb, you should get the Zagreb Card to enjoy unlimited transportation and discounts at museums, restaurants and shops.

Even though it's not the official language, in most places, you'll have no problem communicating in English.

So...

Zagreb is a vibrant city with a charming old medieval environment whose architecture reminds of other European capitals such as Vienna, Budapest or Prague.
